In case you know it or not, the normal traffic you generate when using an instant messenger is transmitted over the internet in clear text. The interesting thing here, is there are programs you can find (in a surprising number of sites) where you can grab all the IM traffic on your local subnet. I use one to practice combatting the problem myself. You would not believe the stuff that people tell each other in these Instant Messengers. I for one have used encryption in my messaging for quite a while.
