Where is the FIFA Soccer?

OK, has anyone watched any of the FIFA soccer matches? I have not and I honestly have not seen anything about them in the TV listings. I even listened to several hours of Fox News today and didn't hear them mention anything about it.

If you hear when it is supposed to be televised, please e-mail me so I can watch a little. It is usually pretty good. At least the kids like it.

Bridget can't warm up.

I could not get Bree to warm up so I made her sit down at the kitchen table with her feet in the soaker. The color of her feet were actually a pale blue. I poured in a very hot salt solution and that seems to have helped. Her circulation is down but that is nothing new.

Painting postponed

We have to postpone the painting scheduled for today. A piece of glass fell off a shelf and I caught it, with my left thumb. 24 hours later, it is still bleeding pretty good. It is cut pretty deep and goes right down to the bone. I know, I saw it yesterday when I set down the piece of glass. It was one of those moments where you think to yourself, "I think I am in trouble". I never panic in situations like this. I always maintain composure and fix the problem. The damn thing bled all night too. Every time I turned over, it would start again. I tried band-aids, but that is futile.

Then, how is he typing" you ask? For some strange reason, I never use my left thumb for anything in typing. I use my right thumb for the spacebar.

Google Calculator

This is kinda "geeky." Well, no ... to tell the truth it is *REALLY* geeky. Really *REALLY* geeky. But it is a cool kind of geeky.

Google now has a built-in calculator! No, really! Go to Google.com and instead of keying in a word or search phrase, key in a math problem like:

2 + 2 or 72 / 3 and Google will automatically show you the answer! That in an of itself is cool (and geeky), but Google's calculator will also solve simple, non-variable algebra and trigonometry problems like: 4^2 + 7 and cosine(75 degrees) That little pointy thingy -- the ^ -- is called a carat, and it is used in ASCII to signify exponents. So 4^2 is actually four squared. And, if that isn't geeky enough for you, Google's calculator also has a built-in unit converter. For example, try keying in 0b1111 in hex or 100 feet in astronomical units Neat, huh? According to Google, "The calculator can evaluate mathematical expressions involving basic arithmetic (5+2*2 or 2^20), more complicated math (sine(30 degrees) or e^(i pi)+1), units of measure and conversions (100 miles in kilometers or 160 pounds * 4000 feet in Calories), and physical constants (1 a.u./c or G*mass of earth/radius of earth^2). You can also experiment with other numbering systems, including hexadecimal and binary"

To prove once and for all that your fearless bus driver has no social life and entirely too much free time, here are just a few of my favorite Google calculator searches:

  • speed of light in knots,
  • 5 smoot - 2 angstroms
  • 1.21 GW(gigawatt) / 88 MPH
  • Answer to life the universe and everything

  • The folks at Waxy.org win for best search, though, for using Google's calculator to find the answer to life, the universe and everything multiplied by the speed of light divided by three teaspoons

I told you this was geeky!

For a pretty good list of every math function and unit of measure that Google's calculator supports, check out: from Dustgun

Finally, for those of you who are Grandpa Simpson fans, I am sorry to report that Google's calculator doesn't yet convert rods to hogsheads... but I'm sure the math geeks at Google are frantically working on fixing that oversight.

    How I block spam.

How do I do it? It is easy. One word,

    RULES!

  • I have rules to put messages from people I know in specific folders. Everything else goes into a folder I go through once a week in the event someone legitimate sent me something. Otherwise, they go into the trashcan.
  • What about emails from people I send resumes out to??? Well, to solve that, I created a special rule where I add the domain of the place I sent it to. Obviously, if the responder has a free hotmail account, they are really not worth the attention. That way I never miss replies to resumes and just have to peek into a special folder.
So, I have no spam problem. I already have over..... over 7200 blocked messages since Monday at 9AMEDT. There are also 4320 messages in my yahoo bulk mail folder. so I have 11,500 spams this week and it is only Friday.
So, what do you do? Tell me, Click here!

    The DVD list - Updated - 09/23/2003@117

Well, I used to have my movie listing in another blog but decided to stop messing with it and just paste the updated list in here semi-anually.
If your wondering what the "slot" number is for, we have a DVD player that holds 300+1 DVDs. So, unless you want to put all the info in every time there is a power outage (which I really don't want to do and don't have the time for) You make a list. I pencil in additions and subtractions, then reprint it once in every 6 months or so. Or when ever the page gets to messy to read. The kids like to use them for places to set their drinks when they watch a movie. The problem with readding the information into the DVD player is kinda moot since it is now running on a UPS. That also covers me if there are power surges or fluctuations. We do live in a fairly bad area for that stuff.

  • Senator Doug White (R) 614.466.8082

  • Now isn't that neat. They are all sporting an "R". Maybe why things are not screwed up like California?!? That is just an observation, I could be mistaken (not).
OK, Ohio has lots of legislation pending which is asinine. They also have a lot of laws on the books which are 180 degrees out from any common sense. But we still seem to be doing better than average. Lots of states are losing jobs to over seas concerns. We are not exception. A large portion of IT jobs just headed to India from just the Cincinnati area. But that is a money concern of business. Not that I agree, but you can't be top heavy in today's society. That is one reason why I can not get a job in the field I once was doing 100% above average.
I will work on this one a little more when I have some extra time.

A good rebuttal (for the August 23rd) post

This is a reply to, well a reply for a posting on 23 August 2003. It is not getting posted till now for several reasons.
  • I wanted to wait a month to get time for others to read the original post (and it's associated reply from Arka),
  • Because I wanted to read it several times before replying to it myself,
  • I wanted to read it several times to assure it didn't say something like "Todd, you ignorant slut" (heh heh heh),
  • And last, because I was doing everything I could to get out more resumes than ever.
Please read this whole thing and tell me whatcha think so I can get it out on the web (or not). You see, I asked Arka, and there was no problem with me posting the reply so you need to note if you do or do not want your post, er,... posted.
No changes were made in the message and (with the exception of reformatting the text to fit in this blog) this is the exact message as transmitted to me Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2003 22:43:19 -0700
Hi Todd, Well, it's an interesting position to be sure. I think that you are correct in seeing that the greatest threat to the American ability to 'lead the world' lie in the nascent economic potential of India and China. It is in this part of the world where the geopolitical and economic upheavals of the 21st century will be centered. Europe is prosperous, but no longer growing, and I worry that we here in States have lost our sense of history. Without remembering the past and learning from it, we have little hope of leading the world into the future.
As to the current state of US military power, I prefer to not couch this in terms of liberal and conservative. I can't really speak for what happened to the military under the Clinton administration because I know little about it. I do know that The White House and the Pentagon had a pretty strained relationship in those years. But while I am a supporter of maintaining a well equipped and professional military, I have some very serious problems with its current mobilization by the Bush administration. On one hand, militaries are meant to protect the nations they serve, but on the other hand, the fundamental purpose of armies is to destroy the enemy. the calculus of war is such that it would be irresponsible for armies to do anything short of completely demolishing the capacity of the enemy to resist, and in doing so, protect those whom they serve. It is this calculus which forces me to so vehemently oppose prosecuting war unless the nation is truly under threat. War is a very nasty thing, as I am sure you are aware through your service, and vicariously through the service of others in the military. The US armed forces today are a full generation ahead of any competing forces, and as such, have the capability of shedding an enormous amount of blood. If we are to shed such blood, let it be for a cause that we are certain is just. When Nazi Germany conquered all of continental Europe in the space of 3 months, and was bombing England in 1942, our way of life was at stake. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, laid waste to the US Pacific Fleet, and threatened invasion of the US west coast, our way of life was threatened. Our armed services answered the call and defended the nation with aplomb, albeit at tremendous cost in lives, both enemy and American.
Over the years, the "US economy has gotten bigger and wars have gotten smaller." In the post cold-war years, we have seen that the key threats to our way of life come not from nations but from rogue groups that operate secretly and disparately to shatter the confidence of Western populations. While the September 11th attacks were the worst example of terrorist activity to date, the US is not the first Western power to be a target of terrorism at home. When the Europeans rolled back their empires in the wake of V-E day, they were assailed by angry terrorists originating from their former colonies. These groups were seeking revenge for what they perceived as centuries of imperial domination. Orpheus response to the situation was almost entirely different from our response; instead of launching wave upon wave of military adventurism to rogue colonies, the Europeans focused instead on better police work at home and more compliant diplomacy abroad. The rewards of their more cool-headed approach have been evident for the last 25 years. There have been no major acts of terrorism within Europe for the last three decades, and aside from some home-grown groups (basque Terrorists and the IRA), terrorism in Europe is largely a problem of the past.
Compare that to our response. In response to 9/11, Bush, succumbing to public anger and the need to respond, attacked Afghanistan. This seemed like a good decision given the ostensible support the Afghan government had extended to Osama Bin Laden. In Afghanistan, our modern military faced off against a nation of hardened but poorly equipped islamic tribesmen who could do little to stop or even understand the ways that the US made war. As it did in 1979 in the face of overwhelming Soviet armor, Afghanistan fell, and a new foreign power was in charge. The cost of that war, financially, was relatively small, and it was here that the current administration faced its primary challenge. Could the Bush administration help build an Afghanistan that would reject fanatical people who would plan acts as outrageously barbaric as the ones in New York City?
To do that in Afghanistan required a number of things; patience, money, and most importantly, an understanding of the people we were trying to govern. Unfortunately, the Bush administration has failed on all counts. What has really changed in Afghanistan? The Taliban, which had bullied rival warlords to tow their party line, were Sunni islamic extremists who forced men to grow beards, banned women from public life, and banned music. In the new Afghanistan, warlords appointed by the US military to govern provinces in Afghanistan are largely Sunni islamic extremists who force men to grow beards, ban women from public life, and ban music. But there is one thing that they do that the Taliban would not allow, and that is to grow opium. Almost overnight, Afghanistan has regained it's title as one of the worlds chief opium and heroin producers. And the US government, all the way up the White House, tell DEA agents in neighboring Pakistan to look the other way, because there is no other way to fund reconstruction in Afghanistan.
And what or our military presence there? Outside of the ISAF, which is now a NATO entity, US forces are holed up in bases toting a great deal of firepower, but not really understanding how to govern or control an area where tribalism, factionalism, and patriotism rule the day. The situation is disturbingly familiar; the Soviets had pretty much accomplished the same thing in the mid 80's. I recently spoke with a former officer of the Spetnaz Russian Airborne in Russia, a veteran of the Afghan war who echoes the same sentiment. So, given this precarious situation, what could we have done?
Invade a much larger, even more ethnically divided country of course! Without any proof of involvement in the 9/11 attacks, George W Bush and his advisers duped the American public into believing that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction which he could use to threaten Americans at home. He could give them to terrorist groups, he claimed. Tony Blair, in an effort to preserve Britain's 'special relationship' with the US, was quick to announce that Saddam Hussein could launch his menacing weapons at a moments notice, showering the western world Fu-Manchu style with agents of chemical and biological mayhem. Of course, we knew what Saddam had and how long he had it; we sold him his chemical and biological weapons stocks in the mid 80's to keep the Ayatollahs of Iran from taking over the middle east. Ronald Reagan, in a special memo, even advised several armed services committee members to look the other way when it was reported that Saddam was gassing Iraqi Kurds. Gassing Kurds is a proud tradition in Iraq started by the Royal Air Force of Great Britain in the 1920's, and looking away from such atrocities committed by powers friendly to us is a proud American tradition. In his zeal to unleash a $200 billion war on Iraq, the Bush administration even stooped to using crude forgeries of uranium dealings between Iraq and Niger as proof of Saddam's nefarious intentions. WMD's became a household term as our troops rolled into Iraq, despite the fact that UN inspectors had found nothing to substantiate the Bush administration's claims. We killed 26,000 Iraqis in this war, if you could call it a war. 'Degrading enemy forces to a non-operational state' is the Orwellian pentagonspeak for slaughtering wholesale thousands upon thousands of Iraqi soldiers and civilians fated to die. And what has been gained by their deaths, and by the deaths of almost 300 Americans in Iraq? Last week, General Abizaid admitted that the security situation in Baghdad is worsening by the day. The occupation is costing the US a billion dollars a week. And the French, who understand well the costs of empire, are reminding us that they told us so. And have we slowed the spread of terrorism to the US and our allies? Well, we have bombings and reprisals in Israel, bombings in Mumbai, India, and bombings in Iraq against the UN and other targets. Soon, I imagine, we will see bombings on our shores.
Bush's zeal to use the military for the destruction and subsequent resurrection of nations he does not like is shortsighted, and his willingness to put the lives of servicemen and women at risk for spurious or unfounded reasons is criminal. Bill Clinton may have humiliated men and women in uniform, but Bush is putting them in the line of fire without just pretense, and that is far worse. Further, his outright disregard for globally established rules of justifiable military action and conduct previously sanctioned by the United States, squanders the sympathy and cooperative spirit that the rest of the world extended to us in the wake of the September 11th attacks. It also makes it more dangerous for Americans such as myself to travel abroad without becoming targets of violent anti-Americanism. And as this administration misuses the nation's military to take more innocent lives, I fear that it also endangers Americans here at home. If my sister or my mother was killed by a stray missile or a trigger happy soldier, I imagine that I might be inspired to take up arms against those who perpetrated such violence. By choosing the path of violence, the Bush administration increases the number of disaffected people on this planet who might seek to do us harm, in revenge for the destruction we have brought to them.
America is being led astray by people who have not learned the lessons of history; these are men who don't understand the way the world works, and only pay lip service to the values that we as Americans hold dear. The trials and travails of European imperialists should give our leaders pause as they contemplate lengthy and bloody occupations of ethnically divided nations. They should understand that war has irreplaceable human costs, and that violence only leads to more violence. If you recklessly take life, you are bound to generate anger and resentment. if the Bush administration really understood the concept of security, they would have taken $200 billion to improve airport security, put more police on the streets, or coordinate US law enforcement. They would have built stronger diplomatic ties with governments and law-enforcement agencies overseas, and improved cooperation between them and our own. They would have used the goodwill and support of the world after 9/11 to build a regime of international cooperation, to prevent malefactors from attacking our progressive values. No amount of money can bring that spirit of cooperation back.
Sorry for the long winded reply,
    Arka C.
Well, I am quite happy to have heard that one. Hey, and I am honest here. It took me about a hour to digest this reply completely. I am trying to be completely fair and balanced in my reporting, no sarcasm intended or implied.

Another app out in today's email

Just sent an e-mail containing all the pertentent information to Raytheon Polar Services for a position in Colorado. It appears to be very similar to both the MIS position I had while Active duty (talking to Admirals and Captains) to the GE Domino manager position where I had to not only work with the GE "Super managers" but the IT people who were doing the grunt work on the systems. I hope I hear back from this one. I would love to work with this company. I had gone out to Colorado about 4 years ago to an Antartic job fair, but found it more political than a search with people who knew their stuff and had experience. I was actually turned away from some positions once they new I was a retired Navy Chief. Since Raytheon took over, I feel I might have a better chance to get in. Even though the position is not one that deploys, it still sounds like an interesting position all the same.
Here is the current view at the south pole. It should update every 10 minutes but you will not see much till it is summer there.

And don't tell me it is too dark to see (duh). It is winter, turning into spring at the time of this posting. Think about that for a second before e-mailing me about it.

Every time, I end up there.

Why is it, not matter where I go, or what I do, I end up sitting in the basement. Once again, to keep things going, I am in the basement, with my laptop, big honkin' pile of crapola to do, and the cold concrete floor. I should be used to it by now. At least it is cooler in the summertime.

Hancock Fabrics, A happy place to work!

Another one for the record. Here is another picture from my Casio Watch Camera. It is not the best picture, but Bree took it on the fly at work.

    This is Rhonda

    This is Rhonda at work

For some reason, I get the distinct feeling she is not happy having her picture taken at work. But, I could be wrong.

Now that is a great idea!

Richard got the great idea of us mowing "For Sale" in the grass of the field on the south side of the house. (That is the field at 5 o'clock in reference to this picture). I thought it was rather a good idea. I think I might do it this fall. Possibly, I would add an arrow in the lower left meadow, (7 o'clock reference from the house) pointing toward the house.
Too bad there is not room for a phone number too!

    What do you think?

    Maryann's first day at school

I am trying my hand at moving photos to the server. Please be patient.
These are of Maryann on her first day of kindergarten. She was fairly happy to get started and had to be the first in line the first day. She had seen Richard and then William with their class lines so she knew she had to be in charge. As you can see, the Teacher (Mrs. Ayers) was kind of ignoring her since she was being "Little Miss Bossy". But, you can't change people. Maryann will do what she does best, be a bossy little girl.
  • Blogger.com
  • A brief view of the house from the realtor's prospective

    Top down view.

This is a view looking down, way down. I found this on Mapquest when I did a search. Cool picture. This one is rather mundane. You can look up 386 Eight Mile, 45255 and get a clearer picture yourself. I reduced it to gain a little disk space. BTW, the brown spots in the lower right hand corner are the picinc areas in Woodland Mound Park. You can't make it out here, but at the far right part of the park road is the Nordyke gate to the park.

    Closeup from above.

In this picture, you can see the fields on the south side, the yard and even the rock wall lining the driveway. Richard got the great idea of us mowing "For Sale" in the grass of the field on the south side. I thought it was rather a good idea. I think I will post that idea again. Maybe even do it.

    Outside Front.

This is a view looking up from the yard. Yes, that is one big honkin' picture window. If I am not mistaken, that window has more square footage, than the floor of my first apartment.

    Living Room

This is the room and part of the house that is constructed from the structural part of the "Echo Valley covered bridge" which, (from what I have been told) is the covered bridge that stood down at the bottom of the valley)

    Kitchen - looking SSW

    Bedroom - Facing South

    Garage view

Now that is a garage. You can convert this building into either a studio apartment, or one bedroom. this was also made out "Echo Valley covered bridge" like the front of the house (living room). There are three levels inside. The bottom is the actual garage. the main floor is the apartment floor and the third is the upper section which could be either a bedroom or loft. Depending on what your mood is.

    More applications out today.

Applied for a positions at Convergys, and Blackwell Consulting Services. Both were for Senior level openings.
The best position of the day was for Information Technology Director at The American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute (AWI) which seems to be an outstanding position that would fit me exactly.
Other searches on today's postings turned up nothing at the following sites (with the exception of the above noted items)
  • Dice.com - 937 Area Code - Dayton - General,
  • Careerbuilder.com - National - Management,
  • Monster.com - Overseas openings,
  • Monster.com - Management openings - National,
  • Monster.com - Management openings - Australia,

  • I also just heard from a good friend and she informed me that "Convergys just laid off 40 people, including one who they thought was great and had just moved here." So, I guess that kinda wraps up the feeling for Convergys.

And on a lighter note, here is a really hi-tech segment from CNN, TechTV and "The Screen Savers" show. It is about a Navy Petty Officer finding what is believed to be the worlds biggest Cheeto. It looks like a big orange baked potato to me but hey, what do I know?!? Also, watch it through the end and watch a ravenous pregnant woman actually eating Chocolate Ice Cream (HaganDas?) and big honkin' dill pickles on TV. (at the same time)
Hit your back button to return and then tell me if you know anyone who has done that combination (that was or was not pregnant).

    Am I getting any better?

I mean with the HTML? I am trying all new kinds of stuff and I wanted to know if anyone thought I was doing any better with how clean my code is?

Please e-mail me or IM me if you think so, (or even if you think I am getting worse) I would greatly appreciate it.

OK, how many people see the irony?

I just subscribed to an "anti-spam mailing list".

    Doesn't that constitute an oxy-moron?

The first Halloween recipe of the season

OK, I had this great recipe I found last year and I will try it later on next week. I wanted to share it because I am not sure if the kids will even eat them if I make it correctly. If you want a html version of the recipe, just e-mail me an I will send it to you.

    Brain Cookies with Blood Glaze

Ingredients for cookies (Makes about 2 dozen) 2 sticks unsalted butter, softened 1 cup sugar 3 cups all purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 large eggs 1/2 cup very finely chopped walnuts or pecans 1 teaspoon vanilla extract About 5 drops red food coloring About 9 drops blue food coloring Ingredients for glaze 2 to 3 tablespoons whole milk 1 cup confectioners sugar 35 to 40 drops red food coloring 2 drops blue food coloring

    Preparation

    1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside. 2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar. 3. Into a separate bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Add the eggs, one at a time, to the butter mixture, beating well after the addition of each. Fold in the nuts, vanilla, and red and blue food coloring, being careful not to overmix the dough. The food coloring will make the dough a grayish color, resembling the color of brains. 4. Place the dough in batches in a potato ricer and push the dough out onto the prepared baking sheets in long tubes. With your fingers, loosely pat and arrange the dough strands into clumps resembling brains, pushing to form 2 lobes and shaping into a walnut-like shape. 5. Bake until golden brown on the bottom, 12 to 14 minutes. Remove from the oven and transfer to a wire rack to cool. 6. Make the Blood Glaze: Combine the confectioners sugar with the milk in a small bowl and whisk to make a thick glaze. Add the food coloring and whisk to combine into a blood-like color. 7. (heh heh heh) Drizzle the "blood" onto the cookies and serve either warm or at room temperature.

Pickled Brothers are going to be there again.

I just chatted with Travis who is one of the members of the Pickled Brothers Sideshow.
We are going to go back this weekend to the festival and the kids are stoked. They were so impressed with the show, they talked about it all the way home. I really think William was concerned about the bed of nails. If you have not seen the show, go see it. If you have, don't forget to visit their site where there are some really good photos of the show, what they do and everything else. I have got to say, between the fire eating, and the sword swallowing, I think I left the show with a sore throat.

CDC-Funded Sex Ed Programs Draw Fire

OK, if you want to read the whole thing, go to FoxNews.com or click here yourself. This is the part to get you steaming. (I do not know how long the link will be good)
[I apologize for starting in the middle of the article]
...Among the programs that the CDC was "putting to work" before the order to kill them (The programs) were: — Becoming a Responsible Teen: Originally designed for teens from 14 to 18, it suggests in a list of recommended activities a trip to the grocery store to examine the different kinds of lubricants for condom use. — Be Proud! Be Responsible!: Designed for adolescents from 13 to 18, it includes “brainstorming” about different ways to make condoms sexy. It also includes role-playing situations involving “negotiating safe sex” in bisexual and homosexual relationships. — Focus on Kids: Designed for youths 9 to 15 years of age, provides “condom hunts” at local markets and a condom race to see who can apply the condom fastest. Rector said all of the programs give the concept of abstaining from sex a nod, but the emphasis on condom use and sex play is over the top. "Its not as if every word in them is bad, but they have a considerable amount of material that no sane parent is going to want their kid exposed to," he said. You can also go to the CDC website to look up more. This is one of those things that just make you wonder how people get these jobs. Last thing.... Is this really progressive thinking, Just a bad idea that got through, an agenda for the far left, or even the "free love" community? You tell me.

So, you need to unwind with a round of mini-golf

Well, if you need to play a round of mini-golf, who am I to stop you? Matter of fact, I have just the site. Try out this version for a quick round. The play is pretty good once you get the hang of the surfaces.

ReplayTV codes: What are the ReplayZones secret codes?

OK, if you do not have a replay TV, don't bother. It is just cheat codes for the unit. If anyone knows any codes, not only go to the site, but tell me too. Hey, I want to know. From ReplayfaqCategory: Tips and Tricks - Last Updated: 07/25/2003 Subject: What are the ReplayZones secret codes? There are a number of codes you can enter in conjunction with the ReplayZones button to access parts of the Replay software (enter the number, and then hit the ReplayZones button): 111-ReplayZones Put the Replay in "game" mode. You must first enter "Joshua" or "Tic Tac" into the Claw Foot Portal (see what can I enter into the claw foot portal?) 411-ReplayZones This one will show you all the information about the Replay, including serial number, software version, most recent connection, and more. 243-ReplayZones This will get you to a menu that allows you to force a network connection to Replay, turn on the network meter, memory meter, and other utilities, and gets you to the "Claw Foot Portal". 382-ReplayZones on the 4XXX models and higher, this will reset the unit to factory defaults. This is great if the unit becomes unstable, or if you need to resize the photo partition. This will erase all shows and recording channels from your unit! If your unit has the 3.X software, use 777-ReplayZones. 243-ReplayZones Entered in the setup menu - Allows you to tweak some remote settings in order to control two different Replays with one programmable remote, as well as set the HUD transparency. 876-ReplayZones When the machine is next rebooted, it will go through the full setup process. 887-ReplayZones Entered in the setup menu - Displays a list of credits for the ReplayTV. 888-ReplayZones Entered in the setup menu - displays a list of haikus written by the ReplayTV staff during the development process. Very funny, especially if you do any software development. Submitted by: Justin Leavens zgozvrm added on 02/06/2003: 999-ReplayZones on 5080 shows "DownloadQueue reuests: ISN" screen. My screen shows 2 shows followed by a 15 digit number (in 3 groups of 5, separated by dashes). For example, "1. Friends 00001-13333-55555" I'm not sure what this means nor what use it is to know.

Do they really think we will buy this garbage?

OK, I am completely sick and tired of the "Hair restoration plans", and the "Hair replacement programs". Look, I don't care what 'clinical trials' or 'money-back guarantees' there are. I don't even care if Bill Clinton said "it worked for me". Ok, bad example, he is a proven liar, (or maybe just guilty of bad judgement) lets change it to George Bush because he has a thick head of hair. Because the only thing that will replace my hair is a swatch from the Dalton Georgia Carpet Outlet, and a friggin' pneumatic staple gun. Sure, you can get viagara which makes things grow, but if they could make hair grow like that, now that would be something.

Site Allows Webcam Watchers to Be Security Guards

Well, its about time the web was good for something.
Carnegie Mellon University researchers have an experiment which allows web surfers to play the role of security guards. Camera Project is the name of this experiment and users can access webcams that monitor public spaces. 6,000 links are posted on the site which feature webcams that monitor everything from students at a Washington, D.C. campus to people being booked into Louisiana and Georgia jails. The site is here! but give it time to load. There are lots of people using it. The researchers who are studying "Surveillance of Surveillances" believe this study will help people be able to formulate rules about how webcams are utilized. Check their web site for more information on this project.

I have to go do some grunt work.

I setup a PC and router for a friend. I would like it if they could do the support work themselves, but their computer knowledge is at the user level. It's OK though. They are good people and I like to be able to help them when I can.

    Sunday, September 07, 2003

Sunday was the day for an outing.

Bridget wanted to see the Ohio Renaissance Festival and I figured it would be fun. Well, it turned out that it was the best time I have had in the last 16 months (Since the family went to Disney World with my Mom & Dad).
Imagine a day where there is; No rushing to meet a schedule, No mean people, No pissy park employees, No hot blacktop to walk around on (there is lots of fresh soft grass), and everyone there treated you like a VIP. Things like; "Glad to see you", "Is there anything I can do for you?, and "You look like you had fun!" (See next paragrph about the mud show) Shoot, even the other visitors were nice which was rather like a scene from "The Stepford Wives" but I am not going to complain. There were lots of great shows that the kids as well as Bridget and I loved. They were all just pure fun and sillyness. The best was the Mud Show where you sit in an arena that surrounds a big sloppy mud pit. I am not going to say more except the this was great. I got so muddy, everyone in the park said "So, I see you have been to the mud show" and the like. The food was good, the weather was great, we were treated like real people and no one was anything but wonderful. This week, it was "Come as you were" days. Where everyone was dressed up like what ever they had relating to the renaissance period or the like. Lots of Knights, Wenches, and squires. Not to mention lots of boobs (every woman appeared to have a substantial push up bra or bodice). Even the side shows we saw have web sites so you can peek. * The Pickled Brothers Sideshow, * The Swordsmen's, * Theatre in the Ground, Don't take my word for it, just go see it and enjoy. I also want to say thanks to Kroger for the discount on tickets and for being what apparently is a very large sponser.

And tell me again why are gas prices going up still?

Well, to screw the normal population, compete with the cost of the war, to bring freedom to people who would rather shoot, bomb, and kill each other, as well as our citizens. Excuse me, but for all of you who forget that US troops are US citizens. Just because their votes don't count in elections does not mean they are not citizens. Well, that was rather plain and to the point for all the people out there who don't know this little fact. And why isn't the general population screaming now that Saudi Arabia has cut oil production? Is it really going to come down to who drives this thing saying, "we will not tolerate this crap anymore"? I am sorry, I have just reached the breaking point with everything. No, now that I think of it, screw it! Pull every single one of our troops back home, have them patrol "our" borders, and stop all the ridiculous funding of every damn third world country on the planet. BTW, ridiculous is the closest word I could come up without cussing. IMHO, This country will fall inside 10 years at the current rate of decay. Unless the brainless "Freelove" droolers are overthrown by the people who have served their country, we are dead. I can't even imagine the ignorance of the people who push the wet-noodle policies we are spewing out on a daily basis. The "Liberal Democrats" are going to kill us all. To start, this will begin with either the judges who won't punish killers in our midst or with legislation and backstabbing that takes the actual working men and women and grinds them into the dirt. Take that you piece of crap taxpayer! And you too Armed Forces Veterans. Who do you think you are? The perpetual welfare recipients of the country will persevere! It's not the meek that will inherit the earth. It's the strong and the outspoken. And BTW, that does not mean the moral people of the world. Just the ones who can band together and shout at the top of their lungs "Were right, your wrong". Which at this time are the immoral minority. Do I really need to say the name "Clinton" in the same context as immorality, or did you already think that when you read the preceeding sentence? I have come to the point where I am constantly wondering where I can go with my family, where it will be safe in the upcoming upheaval. I envision the event will eventually be called a civil war. Where the Right and Left finally come to blows. More descriptive will be the Conservative Moralists, against the Liberal iniquitous authoritarian who have no idea what is right from wrong. Sri Lanka is sounding more and more possible or even probable. The problem is the infrastructure is very close to the Indian population. Much too close for comfort to an insurmountable invading force. The only thing I can compare that to is holding the Alamo (Sri Lanka) against the Mexican forces (several million Indian troops) if you get my meaning. That does not even cover the Pakistani / India nuclear threat that appears to rise and fall with the seasons.

    BattleTech scores another big hit

BattleTech Firestorm @ Dave & Busters Cincinnati
Dave & Busters in Cincinnati has Tesla II installed and it is hot!
The regulars I have spoken to are stoked. The Graphics are deep and heavy and flushes look like they are supposed to. The only example I can give is, if you run Mechwarrior4 on a system over 2.8Ghz, and 128 bit video, you have a smidgen of what it is like. The only way you can come close is to build a cockpit under your stairs and play from there. (That is rather odd, that is what I do.) The schedule for events are not really up to tournment play in Cincy, but there is a Sunday night regulars event every week. You can play from 5PM to midnight on 4 swipes. Richard wants to go next weekend but I imagine we will have to wait to see what is happening before I can commit to him to go. We did go to Dave & Busters for William's Birthday. The Family Fun Center in Eastgate is now gone (much to my surprise) and luckily, we had credit on my Power card from 2 years ago. In other words, we didn't have to spend any money on the games and William (and everyone else) still got to play all the games and blast each other on BattleTech. I read the card before I left and it said we have 60 credits still available. Richard and I both have printouts stating we get 50 credits each from D&B for our birthdays so we can go next Sunday for the weekly regulars "frag" event.

    Mowing is my life.

I worked on mowing the yard again today. The kids brought up all the clean laundry and put theirs away while I was outside. It took about 3 hours to mow the entire yard. I would have been done earlier but I wanted to make it look like a shag carpet. The new blades Ian (my neighbor) bought really help. Since Ian uses the mower, he is taking some responsibility in using it. He always fills it up with gas. That reminds me, I need to fill it up tomorrow. He always fills it up even if he only uses it for an hour. He is just way too nice.

Asteroid 2003 QQ47's Potential Earth Impact in 2014 Ruled Out

Now all the panic filled people of the world can chill. The thing is apparently not going to hit. Good thing too, because the democrats would blame it on Bush!

    Are people really that stupid?

Had a person ask me a really tough and very "specific" question about the computer they was using. They wanted to know how to show the clip board contents. Well, I might have been having a bad day but the response was: Uh, type "clipbrd" in the run line usually works. There is also a "help and support" section right in XP. Plus!, Your local public library probably has many books on the subject of Windows Operating systems and computers. On top of that, there is also a search capability at http://www.microsoft.com which has answers to many of the questions you might have about any of the "Microsoft Windows" products. Next time you want to take the time to: * make up an e-mail with a simple question, * send it off, * wait for a reply, * then see if it works....., How about limiting the amount of "my time" your wasting & others time, by asking something you could have looked up yourself in 1/10th of the time it took me to write this!
Just because you own a computer, does not mean you can get away with not learning to do things for yourself!
Obviously they never took the time to read what I try and write on a day-to-day basis. Otherwise they would have know this before sending me a stupid question.

I have yet to see anything more interesting than this set of images. This is the first of a series of NEAR animated GIFs shot of the EROS Asteroid before the package ultimatly sat down on the object. Tell me that this is not impressive.
NEAR Spacecraft images of the EROS Asteroid
I have several more coming in the series which I will post here. :)

    Oil delivery today.

We received a half load of heating oil today & that gives us a full tank. As long as the electric holds on this winter, we will have heat. If not, we go to wood. We have enough of split wood to last about 4 days of bitter cold or 3 weeks of 40 degree weather. So things are set for the onslaught. With the way the trees are starting to lose their leaves, I have to go back to my Grandmother (Little Grandma) and her idea that when the trees lose their leaves early, the winter will be a bad one.

I'm taking back my browser and my mailbox!

I have started a new blog where I am going to post the spammers, browser grabbers, and annoying ad makers so I can help in blocking this stuff. My Blocking-list I will daily post items to stick into a mega-block rule for Outlook (or any other rules enabled mailer) and items to put into your host file to keep out the nasty browser grabbers. Also, always remember to use AdAware6 to protect yourself from the less scruplious of the planet. And the personal version is free. (I use the pro version to keep them out in the first place without the worries associated with this stuff) This is the AdAware Plus statement: Ad-aware Plus Edition is designed to provide continuous protection from known Datamining, aggressive advertising, Parasites, Scumware, Keyloggers, selected traditional Trojans, Dialers, Malware, Browser hijackers, and tracking components. If nothing else, it is worth taking a look at to see what your up against (every stinkin' day)
